About Mama Jo

I grew up in Connecticut and moved to Brooklyn nearly 25 years ago. My passion for teaching began at a young age, caring for my little sister’s friends and mimicking her teachers during their home visits. I’ve always been active, inspired by my father, a first-generation Italian athlete who excelled despite limited resources.

As an adult, I embraced various physical activities, including cycling, softball, weightlifting, and running. I spent many years coaching Special Olympics, one of the most fulfilling periods of my journey. This experience led me to become an early childhood educator, driven by the emerging understanding of early intervention benefits. Over my 35-year career in education, I continuously pursued further knowledge, which deepened my love for fitness.

My Experience

I completed a 500-hour yoga certification and obtained numerous other certifications, including kids’ yoga. My desire for more knowledge led me to become a personal trainer through NASM, opening the door to a second career.

Now in my sixties, my understanding of fitness has broadened. I recognize that all bodies are different and that aging can be approached with intelligence and grace. Unlike my father’s generation, where fitness careers often ended in their fifties, we now know that good nutrition, exercise, and a grounded mindset allow the brain and body to adapt.

Today, my career is split between my enduring passion for teaching children of all abilities and the joy of sharing mindful fitness with friends over 50.
